TYPICA

The project, Typica was a collaborative piece made by myself, Hannah Shams, Mingxin Ye and Maya Johnston. It was inspired by a research project that was done earlier in the school year where over twenty fonts and their creators were researched and presented on. This previous body of work functioned as the content for this piece. The idea was that we were a type foundry with the job of selling these fonts and so we had to come up with an interesting way to do just that. Therefore, we chose to treat them as places of interest on a map and created the country Typica based on the name we used for our type foundry. The name of this country (and type foundry) was a play on words since ‘pica’ is a unit of measurement for font sizes. The fonts featured are: Arcadia, Apex Sans, Epitaph, Lust Script, FF Scala Sans, Lucida Blackletter, Broadway, Zapfino, Manson, Adobe Jenson Pro, Belizio, Cochin, Iowan Old Style, ITC Officina, ITC Nora, Cholla Sans, Archer Book, Modula, ITC Bauhaus, Calcite Pro, Ed Interlock, Calibri and FF Din. The final result was a 6 in x 9 in (15 cm x 23cm) booklet and a 18 in x 27 in (46 cm x 69 cm) map.
